Greek words & family context
Say it together. These English-letter guides are approximate. Say the CAPITAL part more strongly. The th in THAH-ros sounds like thin; the th in thee-moh-krah-TEE-ah sounds like this. Kh is the throaty sound in Scottish loch. The h in Mastiha represents that same Greek sound. Greek vowels stay steady.
Two little syllables. Village is χωριό: khoh-RYOH. Let r and y flow together, without adding an ee syllable.
Our U adventure. Ouranos means sky. Its opening sound is oo, so it joins us at U. Its English spelling starts with O. This is a sound-based exception in our English alphabet.
Hellas and Greece. Hellas is an English name for Greece. Greek Ελλάς is a formal or literary name; everyday Greek usually uses Ελλάδα.
Families and celebrations. The Easter page shares traditions of many Greek Orthodox families. Greek families have different beliefs and ways of celebrating. Keep real candle flames with adults, away from little hands.
Looking back with care. Ancient Athenian democracy was limited to male citizens; women, enslaved people and resident foreigners were excluded. Our page introduces the historical idea without suggesting everyone could vote.
A warm welcome. Xenia describes an ancient tradition of hospitality. Philoxenia is the everyday Greek word for hospitality today. Children can help welcome guests with a trusted adult.
